"Pensive was created while exploring ideas that would later develop into my larger painting, Garden of Mind. Like that piece, it reflects my ongoing fascination with the colours that exist within skin and the emotional possibilities of portraiture.
Working in oil pastel encouraged a different approach than paint. The medium’s blunt edges required me to work more loosely, allowing colour, gesture, and mark-making to take precedence over detail. I have come to appreciate the freedom this creates, resulting in work that feels more painterly, expressive, and immediate.
For me, Pensive captures a quiet moment of reflection while embracing the spontaneity and energy that come from allowing the medium to lead the way."
